Frequently Asked Questions
How is EPF contribution calculated? +
Both employee and employer contribute 12% of basic salary + DA. Employee's 12% goes entirely to EPF. Employer's 12% is split: 8.33% to EPS (capped at ₹15,000 basic = max ₹1,250/month to EPS) and remaining 3.67% to EPF. Current EPF interest rate is 8.25% p.a. (FY 2024-25).
What is the EPS pension formula? +
Monthly EPS pension = (Pensionable Salary × Pensionable Service) ÷ 70. Pensionable salary is capped at ₹15,000 (average of last 60 months). Minimum 10 years of service required. Maximum pensionable service is 35 years. So max pension = (15,000 × 35) ÷ 70 = ₹7,500/month.
What is the current EPF interest rate? +
EPFO declared 8.25% p.a. for FY 2024-25, up from 8.15% in FY 2022-23. Interest is calculated monthly on the running balance but credited at year-end. The rate is set by EPFO's Central Board of Trustees each year and varies based on the corpus returns.
Can I withdraw EPF before retirement? +
Yes — partial withdrawals are allowed for home purchase, medical emergencies, marriage, and education after specified service years. Full withdrawal is allowed on retirement at 58 or after 2 months of unemployment. If you have more than 10 years of service, EPS cannot be withdrawn — it converts to monthly pension.
Is EPF tax-free? +
EPF has EEE status under Old Regime: contributions up to ₹1.5L under Sec 80C are deductible, interest is tax-free (within limits), and maturity after 5 years of service is tax-free. However, employee contributions above ₹2.5L/year will have interest taxed from FY 2021-22. Withdrawals before 5 years of service are taxable.
