Nitrogen (N) — Growth & Protein

Promotes vegetative growth, leaf development, chlorophyll production, and protein synthesis. Essential for yield formation in all crops.

Deficiency: Yellowing of older/lower leaves (chlorosis). Excess: Excessive vegetative growth, delayed maturity, susceptibility to pests & lodging.
Phosphorus (P) — Roots & Flowering

Drives root development, flowering, seed/fruit formation, and energy transfer (ATP). Critical for seedling establishment and grain filling.

Deficiency: Purple/reddish coloration on underside of leaves, stunted root growth, delayed maturity.
Potassium (K) — Strength & Quality

Regulates water use, improves disease resistance, fruit quality, drought tolerance, and stem strength (lodging resistance).

Deficiency: Brown scorching/marginal leaf burn (necrosis), weak stems, poor grain fill, susceptibility to drought stress.

How much fertilizer do I need per acre for wheat?

The standard NPK recommendation for wheat is 40:20:20 kg/acre (Nitrogen:Phosphorus:Potassium). To meet this requirement using common fertilizers:

Urea requirement: DAP (18% N) covers some nitrogen. After accounting for nitrogen from DAP, you typically need about 1.4–1.9 bags of Urea (45 kg bags) per acre for wheat. DAP requirement: Approximately 0.87 bags of DAP (50 kg bags) per acre to supply 20 kg P. MOP requirement: About 0.67 bags (50 kg bags) per acre for 20 kg K.

Total subsidised fertilizer cost for wheat = approximately ₹1,800–2,200 per acre. These are general recommendations. Soil test results from your KVK can customise this and often reduce fertilizer use by 20–30%, saving ₹400–600/acre.

What is NPK fertilizer and which one should I use?

NPK stands for the three primary plant nutrients: Nitrogen (N) for growth, Phosphorus (P) for roots & flowering, and Potassium (K) for strength and quality. The numbers on fertilizer bags (e.g., 10:26:26) represent the percentage of each nutrient by weight.

For most Indian crops, the recommended approach is: Urea (46% N) as the nitrogen source, DAP (18:46:0) for phosphorus (which also adds nitrogen), and MOP (0:0:60) for potassium. NPK complex fertilizers like 10:26:26 or 12:32:16 supply all three nutrients in a single bag, simplifying basal application — particularly useful for sugarcane, cotton, and vegetable crops.

SSP (Single Super Phosphate, 16% P) is a cheaper phosphorus alternative that also supplies sulphur and calcium — beneficial for oilseeds like mustard and soybean which have higher sulphur requirements.

How do I get subsidy price fertilizer from dealer?

Since 2018, fertilizer purchases in India are linked to the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for Fertilizers system. Here is how to buy at subsidised MRP:

1. Visit a licensed fertilizer dealer — they must have a PoS (Point of Sale) device at the shop. 2. Bring your Aadhaar card — biometric (fingerprint) authentication is required for Urea purchases under DBT. 3. The dealer enters your land details and authenticates your identity. 4. The dealer cannot charge more than Govt MRP — if overcharged, file a complaint with the District Agriculture Officer or at dbtfert.nic.in. 5. For DAP, MOP, and NPK complexes under NBS, the MRP is fixed and subsidised.

Keep your purchase receipt which shows MRP, dealer license number, and quantity. One Aadhaar can purchase the quantity corresponding to your land holding per season.

When should I apply fertilizer — basal vs top dressing?

Basal application (at sowing/transplanting): Apply the full dose of Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K), plus one-third of Nitrogen, mixed into the soil at 5–10 cm depth at the time of sowing or transplanting. DAP, SSP, MOP, and NPK complex fertilizers are typically applied basally because P and K are relatively immobile in soil.

Top dressing (after crop establishment): The remaining two-thirds of Nitrogen via Urea is split into 1–2 top-dress doses. For wheat: First top-dress at Crown Root Initiation (CRI) stage, approximately 21 days after sowing, with first irrigation. Second top-dress at heading.
