📐 How Slab Calculation Works

Indian electricity tariffs use a progressive slab system — you pay different rates for different bands of consumption:

Bill = (Units in Slab 1 × Rate 1) + (Units in Slab 2 × Rate 2) + ... + Fixed Charge

Example — Maharashtra, 300 units:

(100 × Rs.3.78) + (200 × Rs.7.53) + Rs.115 fixed
= Rs.378 + Rs.1,506 + Rs.115 = Rs.1,999

Only units within each slab boundary are charged at that slab's rate. This differs from a flat-rate system where all units are charged the same rate.

Effective rate = Total Bill ÷ Total Units consumed — this blended rate is useful for comparing costs across states.

⚠️ Electricity tariff rates shown are indicative for FY 2026-27 and vary by consumer category, load sanctioned, and DISCOM. Verify current rates with your state electricity board before relying on this estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is electricity bill calculated using slab rates?
Indian electricity bills use a progressive slab system. Each slab of consumption has a different rate per unit. You pay the rate for that slab only on units within it — not on all units. For example, in Maharashtra: the first 100 units cost Rs.3.78/unit, the next 200 units (101-300) cost Rs.7.53/unit. Consuming 300 units means: (100×3.78) + (200×7.53) = Rs.378 + Rs.1,506 = Rs.1,884 in energy charges, plus fixed charge of Rs.115/month = Rs.1,999 total.
Which state has the cheapest electricity in India?
Telangana has one of the lowest starting rates at just Rs.1.45/unit for the first 50 units, while Haryana starts at Rs.2.50/unit. Delhi offers full subsidy for households consuming up to 200 units — making it effectively free. However, higher consumption pushes you into expensive upper slabs in all states. For high consumers (500+ units), states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu tend to be more economical than Maharashtra or UP.
How can I reduce my electricity bill?
Top strategies:
1. Use 5-star BEE-rated appliances, especially AC, refrigerator, and washing machine.
2. Replace all lighting with LED bulbs — saves 60-80% on lighting costs.
3. Set AC to 24°C instead of 18°C — each degree saves ~6% energy.
4. Install a solar rooftop system — if your bill exceeds Rs.2,500/month, payback is typically 4-6 years.
5. Avoid phantom loads — switch off chargers, TVs, and electronics at the socket.
6. Shift heavy loads (washing machine, dishwasher) to off-peak hours if your DISCOM offers time-of-day pricing.
What is the average electricity bill for a 2BHK in India?
A typical 2BHK apartment in India consumes 200–400 units per month, translating to a monthly bill of Rs.1,500–Rs.3,500 depending on state, season, and appliances. During peak summer (April–June), AC usage can push consumption to 500+ units, raising bills significantly due to upper slab rates. City apartments with a split AC, refrigerator, and standard lighting average about 300 units/month outside of summer.
What is a fixed charge in an electricity bill?
The fixed charge (also called demand charge or customer charge) is a monthly fee you pay regardless of how many units you consume. It covers infrastructure costs — the cost of maintaining lines and meters to your home. Fixed charges vary widely: Delhi has Rs.0 (it's folded into slab rates), while Maharashtra charges Rs.115/month. Even if you use very few units, you'll still pay the fixed charge.
