The true total cost of owning a car in India goes far beyond the sticker price or even your monthly EMI. It includes registration and road tax (typically 8–12% of on-road price), comprehensive insurance (2.5% of value in Year 1, reducing each year), fuel costs based on how much you drive, annual maintenance that rises as the car ages, and the opportunity cost of your down payment. Over a 5-year period, a Rs. 10 lakh car can easily result in Rs. 15–18 lakh in total cash outflows before accounting for the resale value you recover at the end.
How do I calculate cost per km for my vehicle?
Cost per km is your single most useful vehicle efficiency metric. It is calculated by dividing your net total cost of ownership (all outflows minus resale value at the end of your chosen period) by the total kilometres driven. For example, if your net 5-year cost is Rs. 8 lakh and you drive 15,000 km/year (75,000 km total), your cost per km is approximately Rs. 10.67. Why is my true monthly cost higher than my EMI?
Your EMI only covers the repayment of your loan principal and interest — it does not include any of the ongoing costs of using your vehicle. On top of the EMI, you need to budget for fuel (typically Rs. 3,000–8,000/month depending on km driven), insurance (amortised to roughly Rs. 1,500–2,500/month in Year 1), and maintenance (Rs. 700–1,500/month on average). Together, these running costs can add 40–80% on top of your EMI amount, which is why the "true monthly cost" figure in this calculator is almost always significantly higher than the EMI alone.
How does resale value reduce the net cost of ownership?
When you sell your vehicle at the end of your ownership period, the amount you recover is subtracted from your total spend to give you the net cost. For instance, if you paid Rs. 15 lakh in total over 5 years (EMI + fuel + insurance + maintenance) but sell the car for Rs. 5 lakh, your net cost is only Rs. 10 lakh. Indian vehicles depreciate steeply — roughly 25% in Year 1 — but the rate slows significantly after Year 3. Vehicles held for 7–10 years therefore show a much better net cost story per year than vehicles sold within 2–3 years.
How much should I budget for vehicle maintenance per year in India?
Maintenance costs vary by vehicle type and age bracket.
