Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in the on-road price of a vehicle?
The on-road price includes: (1) Ex-showroom price (which itself includes GST at 28% + cess for most cars), (2) Road tax charged by your state government — a one-time life-time tax calculated as a percentage of ex-showroom price, (3) RTO registration fee of ₹600 (bikes) or ₹1,500 (cars), (4) Smart card fee ₹200, (5) HSRP number plate charges of ₹400–₹700, (6) FASTag ₹200 one-time, (7) First-year insurance premium (comprehensive or third-party), and (8) Hypothecation charges of ₹1,500 if you take a loan. Dealer handling/PDI charges of ₹2,000–₹10,000 are extra and vary by dealership.
How much is vehicle registration cost in India?
The RTO registration fee for private vehicles is fixed by the central government: ₹600 for two-wheelers and ₹1,500 for four-wheelers. Additionally you pay a smart card fee of ₹200 and HSRP charges of ₹400 (bikes) or ₹700 (cars). Road tax — which is often confused with registration cost — is much larger and varies by state, typically 4%–18% of the ex-showroom price. EVs enjoy 0% road tax in most states. Total registration-related costs (excluding road tax and insurance) usually come to about ₹1,000–₹2,400 depending on vehicle type.
Is road tax a one-time payment?
Yes. For private passenger vehicles in India, road tax is a one-time Life Time Tax paid at the time of first registration. It is calculated as a percentage of the ex-showroom price and collected by the state RTO. The rate differs significantly by state and fuel type — for example, Delhi charges 4% for petrol cars below ₹6 lakh, while Karnataka charges 13% and Maharashtra charges 11%. Electric vehicles enjoy 0% road tax as a government incentive to promote EV adoption. This tax need not be paid again for the lifetime of the vehicle, unlike green tax which may be levied when a vehicle crosses 15 years.
What is HSRP and FASTag cost for a new vehicle?
HSRP (High Security Registration Plate) is a tamper-evident aluminium number plate with a chromium hologram and laser-etched unique code, mandatory for all vehicles registered since April 2019. The one-time cost is approximately ₹400 for two-wheelers and ₹700 for four-wheelers. FASTag is an RFID sticker on the windscreen that enables electronic toll payment and is mandatory since 2021. For a new vehicle, the one-time cost (including ₹100 security deposit) is approximately ₹200 and is usually included in the on-road quote from the dealer. Both are fixed charges paid once at the time of purchase.
Do EVs get a road tax waiver in India?
Yes, most Indian states have waived road tax for electric vehicles as part of their EV policy to incentivise adoption. States like Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Telangana, Haryana and Punjab currently charge 0% road tax on EVs. This means a significant saving — for a ₹15 lakh EV, you save ₹1.65–₹2.7 lakh compared to an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle depending on the state. Some states also provide additional purchase subsidies for EVs over and above the road tax waiver under FAME-II and state EV policies.
